One to three metres long, backrest if you want one, seat in timber or checker plate. It goes in the yard, by the pool, in a stairwell or beside the gate.
A bench without a back is shorter, cheaper and slides under the table. With a back, people actually sit on it for an evening. A dining set usually takes one with a back against the wall and one without on the walkway side.
Timber does not burn the backs of your legs in summer, but wants oiling once a season. Checker plate asks for nothing at all and in July gets hot enough that nobody sits on it. By the pool, timber almost always wins.
A loose bench is easy to move, but a strong wind drags it and scratches the tiles. Anchoring solves both; where the tiles must not be drilled, I make weighted feet instead.
