A shop-bought outdoor set in Cyprus lasts two or three seasons: thin tube rusts from the inside, timber cracks, plastic fades. Here is what to do about it and what it costs.
It is usually not the design, it is the wall thickness and what is inside the tube. Factory outdoor furniture is built from 1 to 1.2 mm tube with end caps that let water in sooner or later. The water stays inside and the frame rusts from where neither paint nor a glance can reach.
The second thing is size. A standard table almost never matches an alcove, a terrace corner or the gap between columns, so it ends up half used.
Oak is beautiful and good to touch, and it wants oil twice a year — without it, cracks appear within two seasons. HPL compact at 12 mm does not fade, does not mind rain and cleans with anything: the best choice for an open terrace. Concrete over steel looks heavy and handsome, but it prefers shade and hates being moved. Glass means laminated glass only, on a rigid frame only.
Powder coating is fine under a canopy or in an inner courtyard. An open spot wants hot-dip galvanising, and the front line wants stainless. On a table the difference between paint and galvanising is about twenty per cent, and it pays for itself in the first windy winter.
Two benches at a table take less room than six chairs, do not blow over, and need no upkeep at all if the seat is checker plate. But a metal seat in summer gets hot enough that nobody sits on it — by the pool and in full sun, timber still wins.
Thin plate warps by the third fire and the lid stops closing. Four millimetres is the working thickness; six holds its shape for years and heats evenly. A chimney is needed if the grill stands against a wall or under a canopy: otherwise the smoke goes where people sit.
