A pergola is priced by three things: the area, the roof and the metal. Everything else — height, sea air, a wall to fix to — adds or takes away a few hundred euros. Below are the real figures from the same model the configurator on the pergola page runs, installation included.
A painted steel frame, installed: 3×3 m costs €1100 open, €1200 with reed and €1350 under polycarbonate. A 4×4 m — the most common garden size — is €1600 open, €1850 with reed and €2100 under polycarbonate. The smallest frame I build, 2.5×2.5 m, starts at €900.
These are not "from" prices with a surprise later. They are what the configurator shows for the standard height of 2.4 m, and the final figure is agreed once I have seen the spot.
Up to five metres on a side a pergola stands on four posts, and the posts with their footings are a fixed part of the price. A 3×3 m frame under polycarbonate works out at about €150 per square metre, a 4×4 m at €131, a 5×4 m at €125.
Past five metres a middle pair of posts appears, because a beam that long in painted steel starts to sag and to sway in the wind. That is the jump between 5×4 m at €2500 and 5.5×4 m at €2950: half a metre of width, two more posts and two more footings.
On the same 4×4 m frame: open for a vine or a shade sail — €1600; reed or bamboo on battens — €1850; clear or opal polycarbonate that keeps the rain off — €2100; rotating aluminium louvres — €3350.
Reed is the Cypriot classic, cheap and cool, but it wants replacing every few years and does nothing against rain. Polycarbonate keeps the table dry and turns the pergola into a proper outdoor room; opal sheet softens the light, while clear sheet under the summer sun can make it hot underneath. Louvres are the most expensive and the most flexible: shade at noon, open sky in the evening.
The same 4×4 m under polycarbonate: €2100 in painted steel, €2450 hot-dip galvanised, €2850 in aluminium. Aluminium does not rust at all, but it is a softer metal and needs deeper sections to cover the same span — that is where the difference comes from.
Inland, painted steel is enough, with a touch-up every few years. Within a few hundred metres of the sea, powder coat on bare steel gives up in two or three seasons; there it is galvanised steel or aluminium, and for a frame by the pool with chlorinated splashes I would not go below galvanised.
The standard height is 2.4 m. Every 10 cm above 2.6 m adds about €125: longer posts and a stiffer frame, because the wind load grows with height. A 4×4 m at 2.8 m costs €2350 instead of €2100, at 3 m — €2600.
A seafront plot adds about €185 for the extra protection on fixings and welds. A pergola fixed to the house wall needs half the posts and comes out cheaper — from €1150 with up to three metres of projection — but only if the wall is load-bearing concrete or block, not thin render over aerated block.
If the pergola is for a car, it is worth deciding what the car really needs. A light pergola with reed over one parking space, 3×5 m, costs €1750. A carport of the same size with a solid sheet roof costs €2200: the roof is closed and heavier, the frame carries more, and the rain has to be taken off somewhere.
For shade over a car in a private yard a pergola is often enough. For protection from hail, birds and winter rain it has to be a carport.
